Marvelous Lovingkindness

1 John 4:19: We love him, because he first loved us.

The word lovingkindness is worth an entire article. According to J. Vernon McGee, a little girl defined it this way: If your mother gives you some bread and butter, it is kindness, but if she puts jelly on it, that is lovingkindness.

Psalms 17:7: Shew thy marvellous lovingkindness, O thou that savest by thy right hand them which put their trust in thee from those that rise up against them. 63:3 Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee. 69:16 Hear me, O LORD; for thy lovingkindness is good: turn unto me according to the multitude of thy tender mercies. 88:11 Shall thy lovingkindness be declared in the grave? or thy faithfulness in destruction? 89:33 Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail. 92:2 To shew forth thy lovingkindness in the morning, and thy faithfulness every night, 103:4 Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; 107:43 Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the lovingkindness of the LORD. (I suggest you read all of chapter 107 to observe what these things are.) 119:88 Quicken me after thy lovingkindness; so shall I keep the testimony of thy mouth. 149 Hear my voice according unto thy lovingkindness: O LORD, quicken me according to thy judgment. 159 Consider how I love thy precepts: quicken me, O LORD, according to thy lovingkindness. 138:2 I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name. 143:8 Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee.

Interesting that the word appears in the book of Jeremiah, the weeping prophet, and in the book of the Hosea, the prophet with an unfaithful harlot for a wife.

Jeremiah 9:24: But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD. 16:5 For thus saith the LORD, Enter not into the house of mourning, neither go to lament nor bemoan them: for I have taken away my peace from this people, saith the LORD, even lovingkindness and mercies. 31:3 The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee. 32:18 Thou shewest lovingkindness unto thousands, and recompensest the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them: the Great, the Mighty God, the LORD of hosts, is his name,

Hosea 2:19: And I will betroth thee unto me for ever; yea, I will betroth thee unto me in righteousness, and in judgment, and in lovingkindness, and in mercies.
